The "limit" on your roll for spellcasting is your Force- if you cast it at force 2, that means a max of two hits can be applie. That roll had 3 hits (one 6, two 5s) compared to your threshold of 1 to levitate. Your total on your roll means absolutely nothing. Better polish your dice (and dust off that Edge) to make the roll and to withstand a drain of 8 - 2 = 6 (which then does physical damage as the force required is above your magic attribute). This means you need 8 hits to succeed on a Force 8 spell. Now, say you want to leviate more than ton of material blocking the way out. Even worse, if it was a glitch without any hit, you'd have a critical glitch. If it were half (or more) of your dice, it'd be a glitch. Since this is less than half your rolled dice, nothing happens. Now you notice a real lot of "1s" in your roll and faint, then you count the 1s. This means your check came up with a success, no matter what else. BUT you used a Force 1 spell with a of 1, so you can only count one of those hits, which is fine, as you only need 1 hit. You count the 5s and 6s, those are your hits. Since you only need to beat a threshold of 1 and no one is opposing the roll, you know that 1 hit will be sufficient and decide for a Force 1 spell. The Force works as, so a spell with a Force of 1 can only have 1 hit you can count, a Force of 4 would allow you to count 4 of your hits.

To start: My character is a dwarf hermetic mage (will = 7, log = 5, spellcast = 6), she weighs 50kg with all her gear on. So, simply put my DM hasn't really done much in the way of magical stuff for SR before and as this is my first campaign I am completely confused and blindly trying to figure things out.
